Rabbi Meir Kahane


 

Meir Kahane was born in New York City in 1932. He was educated at Mir Yeshiva . He received degrees from New York Law School and New York University. He was ordained as a Rabbi in 1956.

Rabbi Kahane founded the Jewish Defense League (JDL) in 1968. He emigrated to Israel in 1971, where he founded the Israeli chapter of JDL as well as the Kach political party.

He was married and had one son, Binyamin. After his father's death, Binyamin led the movement until the and his wife were killed by Palestinian gunmen on December 31, 2000.

Active in both politics and political violence, Rabbi Kahane served in parliament and in jail and is the author of 15 books.

In 1990, Rabbi Kahane was assassinated in New York City. El Sayyid Nosair was convicted of crimes connected with this murder.
