Date December 21, 1988 Location Lockerbie, Scotland Events Pan Am flight 103 from London to New York City exploded in the air over Lockerbie, Scotland. In 1991, Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi and Al Amin Khalifa Fhimah of Libya were charged in both the US and UK for the bombing. Libya initially refused to extradite the suspects, but following sanctions imposed by the United Nations and extensive diplomatic negotiations agreed to a trial, under Scottish law, but held in the neutral grounds of the Hague.
The trial began in May 2000 and concluded in January 2001. The 3-judge panel found Fhimah not guilty and Megrahi guilty of planting the bomb. Meghahi appealed the conviction - see appeal judgement.Casualties 259 passengers and crew
