THE JUDGES
- Lord Sutherland - Presiding Judge
- Ranald Ian Sutherland, 67, has been a judge since 1985. The longest
serving of Scotland's current judges.
- Sits in the First Division of the Inner House of the Court of Session.
- Graduated from Edinburgh University (MA LLB) and was admitted to the
Faculty of Advocates in 1956.
- Served as an Advocate Depute from 1962-1964 and again from 1971-1977.
- Standing Junior Counsel to the Ministry of Defence from 1964-1969.
- Appointed Queen's Counsel (QC) in 1969.
- Member of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board from 1977-1985
- Scottish Representative to the International Association of Judges.
- Lord Coulsfield
- John Taylor Cameron, 65, has been a judge since 1987 and now sits in
the Second Division of the Inner House of the Court of Session and in
the Lands Valuation Appeal Court.
- Graduate of Oxford (Corpus Christi College) and Edinburgh Universities
(LLB.)
- Admitted Faculty of Advocates in 1960.
- Lectured in Public Law at Edinburgh University from 1960-1964.
- Appointed Queen's Counsel (QC) in 1973.
- Served as an Advocate Depute from 1977-1979.
- Chairman of the Medical Appeals Tribunal for Scotland from 1985-1987.
- Scottish Judge on the Employment Appeal Tribunal from 1992-1996.
- Before the Court of Sessions, was a judge in the Courts of Appeal of
Jersey and Guernsey.
- An Editor of Scottish Law and Practice Quarterly.
- Lord MacLean
- Ranald Norman Munro MacLean, 60, has been a judge since 1990.
- Graduate of the Universities of Cambridge (BA, Clare College), Edinburgh
(LLB) and Yale (LLM).
- Admitted Faculty of Advocates in 1964.
- Appointed Queen's Counsel (QC) in 1977.
- Served as an Advocate Depute from 1972-1975 and was the Home Advocate
Depute from 1979-1982.
- Served on the Scottish Legal Aid Board, the Council on Tribunals and
the Stewart Committee on Alternatives to Prosecution.
- Member of the Parole Board for Scotland since 1998.
- Member of the Secretary of State for Scotland's Criminal Justice Forum
since 1996.
- Chairman of the governors of Fettes College in Edinburgh since 1996.
- Chairman of the Council of the Cockburn Association from 1988-1996.
- Chairmen of a committee established by the Secretary of State for Scotland
to review the sentencing and treatment of serious sexual and violent offenders
including those with personality disorders in 1999.

- John Alastair Cameron, 61, has been a judge since 1992.
- Had been a member of the English Bar before moving to the Scottish Faculty
of Advocates, where he served as Vice-Dean from 1983-1992.
- Graduate of Oxford University (MA Pembroke College) and is an Honorary
Fellow of Pembroke College.
- Called to the Bar in 1963 and admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in
1966.
- Appointed Queen's Counsel in 1979.
- Advocate Depute from 1972-1975.
- Served as Standing Junior Counsel to the Department of Energy from 1976-1979.
- Served as Standing Junior Counsel to the Scottish Development Department
from 1978-1979.
- Legal Chairman of Pensions Appeal Tribunals for Scotland from 1979-1992
and President of the Tribunal from 1985-1992.
- Member of the International Bar Association and was Chair of the association's
Judges Forum from 1994-1998. Since 1998 has been a council member
of the association's Section on Legal Practice and its Human Rights Institute.
- President of the Scottish Medico-Legal Society since 1996 and is the
author of Medical Negligence: An Introduction.
